Intimate Tasmanian Beach Wedding

James and Fiona

James proposed on our 6th anniversary whilst we were on holiday in Port Douglas. Celebrating over a beer or two the next day, we planned our wedding weekend!!

We chose Greens Beach as James’s  family has their beach shack there, the location meant a lot to both of us! It was quite a logistical feat to accommodate and cater for 85 people in such a small town! We enlisted countless family and friends to help out and are so thankful to them all.

Our families and the wedding party all arrived the day before, so they joined us to celebrate three of our parent’s birthdays – it was great to relax with our nearest and dearest before the big day. The boys started the day playing golf, apparently James has never played a faster round as the nerves had kicked in!

The girls and I started our day with a walk along the beach to the point – very relaxing! Our hair was styled by Priscilla Stone (Mojo Hair Launceston) and we did our own makeup. The afternoon of my hen’s, we had a lesson at Mecca Cosmetica so we would be pro’s by the big day (and all looked stunning at the hens)! We had a fantastic time getting ready, honestly when else do you get to spend a whole day with your closest girlfriends chilling out and dressing up!

My stepmother in law sewed our wedding date on the hem of my dress – it was a lovely ‘something blue’.

As we were getting ready, we could see the guests gathering to make their way to the ceremony (the exact location was a surprise), which suddenly made it all very real! We then followed the same path along the foreshore to the ceremony location. Our celebrant Dee Potter was fantastic and coped wonderfully with the windy conditions. I walked down the aisle with my dad to ‘Love Serendade’ by The Waifs which has long been a favourite song of mine!

Everyone commented that the wind made it seem as if my dress had a mind of its own – it kept wrapping around James and I throughout the ceremony bringing us together! My dress was by Carla Zampatti – I caught up with my bridesmaids one night after work and Jess spotted the dress. I was adamant that I wasn’t going to have a strapless dress, but once I tried it on, I was sold (and Jess cried she loved it that much)! Not long after, I spotted the bridesmaids and flowergirl dresses in Myer – they suited the beach location perfectly! The boy’s suits were from Bell and Barnett and ties from David Jones.

Straight after the ceremony, the caterers appeared with canapés and the boys pulled eskies with drinks for all out of the bushes!

The path to the reception was decorated with paper baubles (which Alesha, my niece and the flower girl had a great time counting) and signs that I made  – these were a fantastic surprise to all the guests as the wandered along the path to find the venue!

The tables were in an E shape, with the wedding party and partners in the centre – we were really happy with it as it was a bridal table, but not in the traditional sense. We wanted the meal to reflect the casual party vibe, so arranged for family style platters heaving with beautiful food as the main meal. Rachael from Country Catering was fantastic in understanding the style we wanted for the food.

Instead of dessert, we had wedding cake (made by James’ mum) and a sweet table. This was an absolute winner – there was a lot of sneaking back for another cupcake wrapper full of lollies!

The meal was followed by brilliant speeches from our Dads, Nick, the best man and Jess, the maid of honor. Our wedding dance was to ‘Dance like nobody’s watching’ by Donavon Frankenreiter followed up ‘Set it off’ by Timomatic to get the party started! DJ Dan did a brilliant job going above and beyond to keep the party going late into the night!

Beautiful Queensland Garden Wedding

Melynda and Timothy

Tim and I met in 2006 and started dating two weeks after meeting. We had always said that we wouldn’t get married until I had finished studying so in July 2011, six months before I was to graduate, he proposed.

a 550x825 Beautiful Queensland Garden Wedding

The day started off with a french toast breakfast cooked by my lovely bridesmaids at home before heading down to the venue – Matilda Homestead. On the property there is a Queenslander with huge verandahs as well as another cottage. The boys had stayed in the cottage the night before so it was all very exciting arriving and hearing them set up – I was under strict instructions to stay out of Tim’s sight until the wedding!

d 550x366 Beautiful Queensland Garden Wedding

The next few hours were spent getting hair and makeup done by the wonderful Debbie at Canary Hair and Beauty and spying on my future husband setting up. During our engagement, with the help of some wonderful ladies in my life, I managed to make/create/watercolour/chop/tie all of the decorations for the day. It was hard to sit back and watch everyone set up without having any input on the day but rumours were rife that Tim had taken the reigns and was doing an excellent job – and obviously by the photos, he had!

h 550x366 Beautiful Queensland Garden Wedding

Everyone then started to come inside from setting up and started to get ready – this is when it all started feeling real. The girls each got into their navy dress of their choice with shoes from Witchery and I got into my gown from Belladonna Bridesmaids in Woolloongabba. If you are like me and aren’t into beads and sequins, going to a bridesmaid and formal shop may be an option for you! I also got into my something old – mum’s eternity ring, something new – my dress, something borrowed – my best friend’s veil and something blue – a heart on the bottom of my shoe.

It was a very emotional day filled with so much joy but also a lot of tears! As soon as dad walked in to get me before we walked down the aisle, he couldn’t hold back his tears, which started the waterworks for everyone (even the photographers!)

l 550x366 Beautiful Queensland Garden Wedding

k 550x366 Beautiful Queensland Garden Wedding

The bridesmaids walked down the aisle to “Good Morning” by William Fitzsimmons and dad and I walked down to “Bloom” by the Paper Kites. Walking down the aisle was probably the most emotional I’ve ever felt. Knowing that I was walking towards the man I would be with forever was the most surreal feeling. The photographer’s favourite photo is the one of Tim watching me walk down the aisle – he said he just couldn’t help but feel choked up! The ceremony was all I had wished for and with the vows we wrote together, Tim and I sealed the deal.

We continued the celebrations on the property with canapes, lawn games, speeches and a photobooth and had all photos taken on the property. Our cake was made by Marianne’s Creative Cakes. Our catering was done by Cuisine on Cue who were so helpful in the lead up to the wedding and so professional on the day. They were happy to work in with what we had and even cleaned up the glasses we hired from another company! The photobooth was a hit and I recommend The Photopod to anyone! Tim and I put aside half an hour to spend time in the photobooth for guests to get photos with us. It was a great way to have a quiet (and super fun) five minutes with our guests.

Our photographers, good friends Martin and Karl did an amazing job. They made us feel so comfortable and let us choose the style of the shots. My favourite is the one of the boys – so gentlemanly!

My advice to other brides would be to utilise friends and family! It was such a huge help with decorations and setting up.  Both mine and Tim’s family helped set up in the morning, his aunty arranged our carnation bouquets, his other aunty became our wedding planner for the day and I had a whole heap of help with decorations. People want to help, so delegate! Oh, and soak everything in on the day – it really does go so fast!

Ms Gingham says: Oh poor Dad! Such a beautiful moment to have caught in a photograph! Really loving your braided hair here too Melynda!

Melynda says: “I recently got married and thought I would share some details and photos of the day. I’ve been reading Polka Dot Bride for a while now – even before I got engaged and it has been a great source of inspiration… Australian inspiration!”

Tips for the Perfect Wedding Speech

by

austin speech Tips for the Perfect Wedding Speech

Image by Sayher Heffernan via Raisin Red and Pink Quirky Country Wedding

It’s no surprise that public speaking is the number one phobia that people suffer from in the world, and not to be morbid here, but to quote Jerry Seinfeld “According to most studies, people’s number one fear is public speaking. Number two is death. Death is number two! Does that sound right? This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you’re better off in the casket than doing the eulogy.”

If you are reading this thinking that you won’t be responsible for giving a speech at a wedding, maybe think again. Weddings these days no longer restrict the speeches to the best man and the father of the bride. More and more weddings are including speeches from the maid of honour, the groom himself and sometimes even the mothers of the bride and groom and close friends and family.

purple flower 550x467 Tips for the Perfect Wedding Speech

So what are some sure fire ways to ensure you not only survive your next speech, but make it one the bride and groom will remember forever?

Write it down

Make sure you have your entire speech written down. This will ensure you won’t forget a word, and if you get lost at any point, you can refer back to it to find your footing. Like any speech, it is important to have a beginning, middle and end. This will keep your speech clear and in a logical order – remember no one likes a rambler.

Practice makes perfect

Yep, as the old saying goes, practice makes perfect. Read it out loud over and over again. It doesn’t have to be in front of anyone, it could be in front of the mirror or the cat. To appear as though you have given hundreds of wedding speeches, run through the entire speech seven to ten times before the actual day. This will ensure you know exactly what you need to say fluently and confidently.

Timing is the key

As a general rule, try not to let your speech run over five minutes. After about five minutes, you might start to lose your audience due to boredom. If you wish to have a longer speech, try to incorporate some humour. This will not only keep your audience listening, but laughing and wanting more at the same time.

Body Language

Your body language is a very important tool in conveying what you are trying to say. If you stand up straight, this will assist in projecting your voice. Making regular eye contact with your audience will give your speech a more intimate feeling. Last but not least, breathe and smile. This will show the audience that you are relaxed and at ease – even if you are not!

Story Telling

If you choose to include any stories in your speech, make sure the stories directly relate to either the bride or groom, and stick to a story that most of the guests will be aware of. Skip any of the stories that will leave anyone feeling embarrassed, or that are crude and inappropriate. You don’t want to offend the bride or groom, or any one in the audience for that matter.

Drink Responsibly

No matter how nervous you are, under no circumstances drink your nerves away. Stick to water because you really don’t want to be rushing or slurring your speech.

Most importantly relax! You are giving a speech at a wedding. Weddings are a time for celebration. If you put the extra effort into preparing and delivering your speech, you might have the bride, groom and guests eating out of the palm of your hand!

Craig and Leah

Craig and I are high school sweethearts. We met at school when I was 15 and Craig was 17. From the day we met I knew we would one day end up married. Then after 12 years together Craig took me and our puppies on a surprise weekend away to a B&B in Kangaroo Valley on the NSW South Coast. We walked to a gorgeous little restaurant for dinner that night and I thought Craig was acting strangely.

As we walked back to the B&B we passed the most quaint community hall with a party in full swing. It looked so stunning with fairy lights and lanterns everywhere. I gushed to Craig “Oh imagine how cute that would be for a wedding!”. He ended up dragging me away and back to the B&B where 20 minutes later I had a gorgeous pear shaped diamond on my finger and a fiance!

My next thought was I know where we can have the wedding…. and so the decision was made. We booked the Kangaroo Valley Community Hall for a year and a day later for our wedding reception. Then the fun started with the planning. Being a wedding florist and stylist, I really wanted something unique. We organised the wedding to be a weekend away with all our friends and family. And most of all it had to be like a big party, of course with gorgeous flowers. We really wanted it to be unlike a “stock standard wedding”.

I loved the country rustic feel of Kangaroo Valley and based our wedding theme around that. The hall offered us a rustic blank canvas where we could do whatever we pleased. It was a huge job co-ordinating all the aspects of the wedding, especially as I wanted to DIY so much of it.

0222 Rustic Country Handmade Wedding

We did a huge amount of details ourselves and everything was very much DIY. We made the bridesmaids dresses, my husband brewed a special beer for the day “Mr and Mrs Battleys Valley Pale Ale”, we made wedding survival kits, decorated the venue, made the invitations, made a lolly and dessert buffet, sewed the table runners and of course I made my own flowers.

0032 Rustic Country Handmade Wedding

The day was absolutely perfect, with not a cloud in the sky. I woke up at 6.30am and ran around the property we had booked screaming “Its my wedding day!”. All the girls relaxed with champagne in the morning while I finished the bouquets and buttonholes and had photographs taken. I was actually ready 40 minutes early and was itching to get to the wedding.

By the time we got to the wedding my dad had been crying for 40 minutes and I was bursting with excitement! To arrive at the church in our vintage Kombis and see Craig standing at the end of the aisle looking so handsome and happy was the best feeling. I felt so overwhelmed with happiness.

Following the service the guests all made the stroll up the main street for cocktails and canapes while we had our photographs at the gorgeous property we had booked for the weekend.

The only hiccup of the reception was the lead singer of the band, The Escalators had taken ill that morning and was unable to sing. After a few frantic phone calls, it was decided my gorgeous matron of honour Fiona, who is a professional singer would sing all night with the band (who were amazing!). Unbeknownst to us, Fiona had learnt the guitar to serenade Craig and I with a gorgeous song “the wedding song” by Angus and Julia Stone. It was a truly beautiful moment and there was not a dry eye in the reception.

0251 Rustic Country Handmade Wedding

We tried to incorporate as many personal touches to the reception as possible such as a polaroid photobooth by Luxe Event Decor with quirky questions and framed photos of our families weddings. The wedding ended at 1.30am and it really was like a big party. People didn’t want to leave!
